Blumhouse Confirms Insidious Franchise Is Going on Hiatus After The Red Door (2024)

James Wan's incredible universe of horror sub-universes have all invaluably contributed to what is undoubtedly one of the greatest legacies in the history of the film genre. Among them is the popular Insidious franchise, which has its latest film Insidious: The Red Door about to release this weekend in theaters everywhere. While it will see the Lamberts once again return to the Further to put a stop to the demons relentlessly haunting their family, the film will also be the last installment in the series for quite a while. Per a report from DiscussingFilm, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions disclosed that the Insidious franchise will go on hiatus after the release of the fifth movie.

Insidious was the second established sub-universe created by horror mogul James Wan, after his introductory Saw universe became a viral sensation in the early 2000s with the first few films, each of them created on an impressively small budget, and had horror fans flocking to the theaters every single year at Halloween. Insidious, which premiered its first film in 2010, took a more supernatural route with its premise, and once again drew the crowds devoted to Wan's undeniable craft. The fifth film of the series, titled The Red Door, is directed by its lead star Patrick Wilson, a frequent collaborator of Wan's who also stepped over into his subsequent Conjuring universe, the most popular by far. Other stars include Ty Simpkins (The Whale), Rose Byrne (Spirited), Lin Shaye (The Grudge), and newcomer Andrew Astor.

As The Red Door will see hopeful closure and reprieve for the Lambert family from the demons that have plagued them throughout every film, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions has now announced that it will be the last Insidious movie for quite some time, at least until they manage to come up with a worthy continuation of some kind. He had this to say on the matter:

"You better see this Insidious, it’s the last one!...To give a more serious answer, [The Red Door] is going to be the last we’re going to see of Insidious for a while. It may not be a forever rest, but it’s certainly going to be a very long rest. So, if someone comes up with some idea in 10 years, who knows? But there’s not a plan – as there has been with every prior Insidious movie – there’s no current plan in place for number six."

What's Next on Wan's Terror-Filled Docket

Insidious: The Red Door may or may not be the last film of its respective franchise, but James Wan has more than plenty of other projects within his horror multiverse in the works. The Nun II, which will continue the events of Sister Irene's battle against Valak's reign of terror, comes to theaters in early September. The newest trailer for the film actually just dropped today. Alongside that is the M3GAN 2.0 sequel, which will follow the events of its incredibly popular origin film that blew up theaters last year. Production also wrapped this past February on the latest installment in the Saw franchise, simply titled Saw X, which will see notable alums Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith return as John Kramer/Jigsaw and Amanda Young respectively.

On top of all that, there is also an Insidious spin-off film in the works, reportedly to be called Thread. It will take place in the same universe, though with a new story, with Jeremy Slater at the helm as writer and director. Starring so far will be Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani as a married couple who use a dangerous spell to travel back in time to prevent the tragic death of their daughter. Doing so also unleashes a terrifying paranormal entity that seeks to haunt their every step.

Insidious: The Red Door scares its way into theaters everywhere starting tomorrow, July 7. Check out the latest trailer for the film below, along with the official synopsis from Sony Pictures.

"Set ten years after the ending events of the second film, Josh Lambert heads east to drop his son Dalton off at an idyllic, ivy-league university. However, Dalton’s college dream becomes a nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both. To end the haunting and to put the demons to rest once and for all, Josh and Dalton must return once again to the Further in order to stop the Lambert nightmare for good."
