<![CDATA[Decorah News Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (1)

Apr 5, 1943 - May 16, 2024Toni L. Mulert, age 81, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Grinnell, IA, Decorah, IA, and Casa Grande, AZ, passed peacefully on May 16, 2024, at Luther Manor in Dubuque, while supported by her loving family.Toni was born on April 5, 1943, in Dubuque, IA, to Donald C. and Sharlye (Woodward) Moes while her father was stationed in Europe during WWII. She was a proud graduate of Dubuque Senior High School class of 1961 and went on to earn her nursing degree from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing. Toni was united in marriage to the love of her life, Donald Mulert, on September 4, 1965, at Nativity Catholic Church in Dubuque. They were blessed with 58 wonderful years of marriage and three children, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild whom they've loved and nurtured for many years. Toni committed her working life to serving others as a pediatric and geriatric nurse, where she assisted many with their recovery and even more with their transition to the next stage. Toni's heart was always focused on the well-being of those around her both at work and home; this reality was continually visible for all to witness. Toni was always there to help others, not just in her nursing career, but by volunteering for community, church, and service organizations throughout her life. She was rarely idle in her life and was always working on a project. Toni was an avid crafter and enjoyed spending time creating new treasures for her home and for others. Her talents ranged from painting to quilting, cooking to cardmaking, gardening and writing of all types. She authored crafting books in the 1970's, but more often created humorous poems to celebrate friends and family. Later in her life, Toni enjoyed family genealogy and spent countless hours researching and writing about her ancestry. This research informed a 2008 trip to Luxembourg, Germany, and the Netherlands to tour the villages where many of Toni and Don's ancestors originated.Christmas was a special time for Toni. She loved the holidays, and always had seasonal decorations out, but Christmas often resulted in an explosion of joy in each and every room in her home. She even had a special second full sized tree decorated for the grandchildren. Although she came from a small family, Toni embraced being part of the much larger Mulert clan. There were always kids of all ages in the house, including Don's siblings and later friends of her own children that would sometimes stop just to visit with her. Her greatest joy in life was her family, immediate and extended, particularly her grandchildren. Although they often lived far away, she would plan activities to do with them months in advance so she could make the most of her time with them. She had a special place in her heart for those that could give and take a good-natured ribbing. Toni always had those few friends with whom she traded barbs, inside jokes, and occasional pranks. She had a wicked streak, especially when playing cards, whether it was euchre, gin rummy, or poker. She was competitive, but also a patient coach when she was teaching tactics and strategy to her grandchildren. Toni shared a love of travel with Don throughout their lives, including countless family camping trips. Upon retirement, Toni and Don spent 6 years traveling the U.S. in their RV before they settled in Arizona. Toni lives on in the memories of her loving husband,Donald Mulert, Dubuque, IA;her three children,Heidi (Steve) Scherf, Pleasant Hill, IA,Scott (Jeff Ohern) Mulert, Minneapolis, MN,and Russ (Carrie) Mulert, Lexington, KY;her six grandchildren,Jacob (Megan) Mulert, Dan (Jocelyn) Mulert, Jenna (Dominic) Falsetti, Brian (Shelby Shanks) Mulert, Joseph Mulert, and Lucas Scherf;her great-granddaughter,Madison (Jacob/Megan), and a beautiful set of twins (Brian/Shelby) on their way this autumn;along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.Toni was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Steven Moes.To honor Toni's life, a Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 1870 St. Ambrose Street in Dubuque. Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the church service. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Dubuque. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Toni's family. In lieu of flowers, a Toni L. Mulert memorial fund has been established which will be distributed among her favorite charities.Toni's family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Luther Manor and Hospice of Dubuque for all of their professional and compassionate care.Online condolences may be shared with Toni's family at www.tristatecremationcenter.com

<![CDATA[Decorah News Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (2)

Dec 14, 1948 - May 17, 2024Robert (Bob) P. Maxson(75) was born December 14, 1948, to Marian and Paul Maxson in Richfield MN. He graduated from Richfield High School in 1967 and began his college career at Eastern Illinois University where he received an MBA. He enjoyed being involved in many sports, playing football in both high school and college . In college, he found his niche in student government. After college, he worked for a time as a bank examiner, but because he wanted to be closer to family, he moved back to Richfield where he met Paulette Brutger. They were married and had two children, Erin (1983) and Michael (1988). During his time in Minneapolis, he worked at two different business colleges as a teacher. He eventually became an administrator and was chosen as President of Minneapolis Business College. Because of the time away from family that a presidency required, he chose to seek a different job in NE Iowa in 1991, so they moved to Decorah, where he was hired at NICC as Dean of Business, Agriculture, and Communications. He joked that it was a high learning curve because he barely knew what a combine was, having grown up in the Twin Cities his entire life. He eventually became Vice President of Administrative Services and Provost at NICC, Calmar. His nickname of "Bob the Builder" evolved as he loved projects which expanded new facilities and remodeled old ones. Others called him "the budget guy" since he was responsible for keeping the finances of the college on track. He loved mentoring others and trained many individuals to fulfill new jobs such as deans, human resource specialists, and college presidents. His opinion was valued by many who knew him to be a man of integrity and compassion. Bob always valued people as individuals and treated all with respect. He established emergency funds to help students who were unable to make ends meet while they attended college. If there was ever a cause to help others, Bob was at the forefront. After 25 years of marriage, he and Paulette divorced in 2003. Later that year, he was introduced to Susan Cantine, a Decorah High School teacher. In 2005, Susan and Bob were married. They both took early retirement and planned to move to Lansing IA to enjoy a life of leisure. In 2006, a friend who was now a community college president in Kansas called to recruit Bob to come to Concordia KS to be the vice-president of student services and to bring the college's budget back in line. They moved and ended up being in Kansas for 8 years while Bob worked for Cloud County Community College(CCCC) and Susan ran a 100-year-old opera house. In addition to his job in Kansas, they were avid supporters of CCCC sports teams, particularly basketball. Bob's love of history spurred on his support of the Brown Grand Theatre, the National Orphan Train Complex, and the WWII POW Museum, all in Concordia. He was proud of his accomplishments at CCCC which included many building renovations and new building projects. He was instrumental in establishing geo-thermal energy for the school as well as helping to create the wind technology program.Bob received numerous awards during his career including CCCC Outstanding Service Award, Iowa Outstanding Administrator Award; Phi Theta Kappa National Administrator of the Year, and the NICC Outstanding Retiree Service Award. In 2014, Bob and Susan took "real" retirement and returned to Lansing IA. Bob entered Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing in 2023, where he died after a lengthy illness on May 17, 2024.In addition to sharing a birthday, Bob and Susan shared a love of family, laughter, gardening, and traveling. They journeyed to Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Washington DC, New York City, New Orleans, Canada, Costa Rica, both coasts, numerous national parks, and many states. They loved visiting historical sites and natural wonders. He was a Vikings fan all his life.Bob is survived by his wife, Susan Cantine; his children Erin Maxson Kiene, (Jesse Kiene), Michael Maxson and 2 step-sons, Andrew (Kasey Hutchinson), Aaron (Jenni) Cantine, his sisters Paulene Bingham (Doug) and Barb Hauri, seven grandchildren, numerous nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary Hager. A celebration of life service (Beer & Brats for Bob) will be held at TBock's upper level in Decorah on July 6 from 3-6.Please join the family for food, stories, and memories of Bob.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to NICC Foundation , Student Crisis Fund or Student Support Fund (8342 NICC Drive Peosta, IA 52068) ; Cloud County Community College Bob Maxson Scholarship for Leaders(P.O. <![CDATA[Decorah News Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (47)

Oct 25, 1928 - Feb 26, 2024October 25, 1928 - February 26, 2024Viola Bohr, age 95, of Decorah, IA, passed away on Monday, February 26, 2024, at Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024, at St. Benedict Catholic Church - 307 West Main Street, Decorah, IA with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding. Burial will be in the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian.Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m., until the time of service at the church on Friday morning. Viola Marie Bohr was born on October 25th, 1928, the daughter of Anton and Mathilda (Hagemen) Bohr, near Ossian IA. She was the oldest of 7 children. When Viola was 10, her father became ill and by the time she was 12, he had passed away. She immediately had to assume the role of an adult as she was her mother's "next in command". One memory her siblings had was her frequently forgetting to put salt in the bread...they never let her forget that one! In high school, Viola loved to learn, graduating in just 3 years. She was also proud of her achievements on the basketball court. Viola was the epitome of being a "lifelong learner". After graduating from St Francis DeSales HS in 1945, Viola went to Minneapolis and was educated as a lab tech. This was quite a feat for a single woman in the 40's! She lived with a couple there and exchanged housekeeping services for room and board. During her working career, she was employed at the Waverly and Cresco Hospitals, Lake Forest, IL Hospital, Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA and Schoitz/Covenant Hospital in Waterloo, IA eventually becoming the Lab Department Manager. She continued to work towards getting her BA in Biology at the University of Northern Iowa and her MA in Health Management from Central Michigan. Even after retirement, Viola continued to seek out learning opportunities and became a Massage Therapist, with her claim to fame having Ron Steele, from KWWL News, being one of her clients! She embraced new experiences and never shied away from a challenge. One of her adventures in her life included joining Care Medico Services and spending 2 years in Algiers and Afghanistan providing lab technology services. She shared stories of the cultural uniqueness and of the challenges of being a woman in the 60's in the North African/Middle Eastern countries. Traveling never bothered Viola. She and her brother, Jerry once drove home from California, literally sleeping on the side of the road (on the ground!) instead of getting a hotel. Once she returned to Iowa, Viola traveled home most weekends to assist her mother once again. And during that time, she became a large part of her nieces and nephews' lives making many batches of freezer corn, strawberry jam, and quilts. They always loved seeing Aunt Viola driving in her little Volkswagen Bug.In 2000, Viola moved "back home" and embraced her life in Decorah by volunteering at Aase Haugen, helping establish the Low Vision computer, working with the Geneology Association, and being a part of the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Benedict Rosary Society. If you knew Viola, you knew she always had a rosary in her hand and wore out more rosaries than we can even count as she frequently gave her family rosaries to "fix". She had many prayer books but was very deliberate about which prayers she would pray or not pray. In one prayer book, she clearly crossed out a prayer titled "Prayer for the Lonely". When asked about it, she said, "why would I pray that prayer, I'm not lonely". A single woman her whole life and never once considered herself lonely. During her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her siblings playing word games, going to the "Boat", watching the Cubs and reminiscing about days gone by. Viola was fearless and faithful. She had a quiet strength and gentle soul who encouraged others to "go do your thing" She did not demand attention, and yet made an impact on all she encountered. Viola knew her life's journey was coming to an end and waited patiently for the day when she would be called home. Her lifelong deep faith gave her the strength to approach death with peace, grace, and acceptance. She was an inspiration to many til her last breath and she will be dearly missed.Viola is survived by her brother, Duane (Connie) Bohr, her sisters, Arlene Bohr, Jeanne (Bohr) Lechtenberg and many nieces and nephews.Viola was preceded in death by her father Anton (1942), mother, Mathilda (1995), brothers Wilfred (1999) Linus (2001), Gerald (2023), Sister in laws Arlene (2012), Evelyn (2016), Brother-in law Duane Lechtenberg (1988), nephew, Kevin Bohr and niece, Amy(Bohr) McClure.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024, at St.

<![CDATA[Decorah News Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (51)

Jul 31, 1948 - Feb 24, 2024Sandy Felke, age 75, of Decorah, IA, died on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at her home in Decorah surrounded by her family.Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, 1725 Washington Prairie Rd. In rural Decorah with Rev. Jennifer Edinger presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Helms Funeral Home, 306 E. Water St., in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning. Sandy was born on July 31, 1948, to Wesley and Marie (Hangartner) Snitker, in Decorah, Iowa. After her mother passed, Sandy took on the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings. In 1965, Sandy met Leon Felke while "cruising" in downtown Decorah, "American Graffiti" style. Sandy and Leon married October 3, 1965, and went on to have three girls: Shelley, Kimberly, and Keri. After raising her girls, Sandy started working outside the home. She held many different jobs: she enjoyed greeting students at Decorah High School while she worked, always good for an extra scoop of the students' favorite; however, her true love was cooking and baking at Burl's Diner, which she owned with her daughter, Keri. Sandy was well-known for her famous cookies, pies, and, especially, her hot beef sandwiches.Sandy liked to collect vintage items with cherries and Santa Claus figurines, and she amassed an impressive display. She also collected antique furniture and enjoyed refinishing the pieces. Sandy loved Alan Jackson's music, and she and Leon saw him live, in concert. She was a strong dancer and knew her way around the dance floor. Sandy and Leon enjoyed riding motorcycles and attending car shows together.Sandy's everyday usually consisted of baking goodies, reading novels in her sunroom with her houseplants, brisk walks with her sisters Karen and Patti, and filling her feeders to watch the birds. But if you really want to know Sandy, her pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She picked up Kalob from preschool every day, Gunnar and Archer spent Wednesday late-start mornings with "Nini," and Kaisha would FaceTime her daily. Kane, Kullen, and Brooks love snuggling into Nini for a cartoon or a book. Her grandkids and great-grandkids were the luckiest recipients of her sweets—she always sent home baggies of homemade cookies, banana bread, or muffins. She delighted in spending time watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports, venturing far and near to relish in dirt-bike racing (Archer), football (Kalob, Gunnar, and Archer) and soccer (Kaisha and Kane) games, and track and field (Kalob and Archer) and Science Olympiad (Kalob) events. She also traveled with her family to attend a college visit at San Diego State University and frequented family reunions, including a trip out west to Cody, Wyoming, throwing in a drive through the Badlands and Yellowstone. They visited family in West Virginia, hiking mountains and riding a train to The High Falls of the Cheat. One time they stopped in Nashville, Tennessee and took in the sights at Dollywood.Sandy is survived by her husband—Leon; daughters—Shelley (Kevin) Patten of West Virginia and Kim (Mike) Sims of Decorah; grandchildren—Kalob (Kendra) McCaffrey of West Virginia, Kaisha (Sarah) Benson of Minnesota, and Gunnar (who first called her Nini) and Archer Sims of Decorah; great-grandchildren—Kane and Kullen McCaffrey of West Virginia and Brooks Benson of Minnesota; sisters—Judy Barnhouse, Karen (Sonnie) Ashbacher, Karla (Terry) Fisher, and Patti (Rick) Hughes; and brothers—Greg (Mary) Snitker and Gordy (Mary Moen) Snitker.Sandy was preceded in death by her parents—Wesley and Marie (Hangartner) Snitker; daughter—Keri Felke; brothers—Gary, Gale, Grant, and Gorman; sisters—Katheryn Vaupel and Janet Larson; sisters-in-law—Janie Snitker and Sharon Snitker; brothers-in-law—Steve Eldridge, Clark Larson, and Fred Barnhouse; and father- and mother-in-law—Errol and Ethel Felke.SERVICESVisitationWednesday, February 28, 20244:00 PM - 7:00 PMHelms Funeral Home306 East Water St.Decorah, IA 52101Funeral ServiceThursday, February 29, 202411:00 AMWashington Prairie Lutheran Church1725 Washington Prairie RoadDecorah, IA 52101

During her time at Wartburg, Kelley won the Nobility Award for making meaningful and significant contributions to the college community. Kelley was also inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society which highlighted pre-service educators demonstrating the propensity to foster excellence in education. In addition, Kelley was a member of both the football and wrestling cheerleading teams. Kelley was united in marriage on June 26, 1999 to Scott Mikesh of Calmar, Iowa. To this union, Josie Noelle was born on Feb. 25, 2005.Kelley was an elementary education teacher. Kelley taught at St. Benedict Catholic School in Decorah, Iowa, St. Michael Catholic School in Worthington, Ohio and St. James Catholic School in Madison, Wisconsin. Sadly, Kelley was diagnosed with MS in her early 20s which contributed to a need to end the profession that she loved. Over the years as a mother and teacher, Kelley was meticulous in her desire and belief for creating environments that were safe, happy and equitable for those around her. Kelley's spirit and enthusiasm were contagious and she was naturally able to have an impact on everyone that she interacted with. Among many things, Kelley loved to read, learn and spend time with family and friends. Above all, Kelley had a love for family and took pride in attending activities and watching her daughter, Josie, grow towards adulthood culminating in her recent acceptance as a freshman at Indiana University. During her later years, Kelley required around the clock accommodations due to MS. Numerous dedicated and selfless relatives, friends and health care professionals provided ongoing support. In addition to her immediate family members, Kelley was enormously grateful for the care provided by Scott, Theresa Trevor, Charlie Kay, Angie Morey, Alyson Johnson and a litany of caregivers from Whispering Pines and Cherry Meadows, with many becoming close friends. Kelley will be remembered as a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt and cousin. Kelley showed an acute ability to be unwaveringly kind and sympathetic towards those who were less fortunate or experienced undeserved challenges. Kelley touched many hearts with her kindness, care, wit and humor. While a bit "sassy" at times, Kelley's heart was pure and full of love for those close to her.Kelley is survived by her daughter: Josie Mikesh of De Pere, Wisconsin; former spouse; Scott Mikesh of De Pere, Wisconsin; parents Barbara and Phil of Decorah, IA; sister Kimberly (Burg) Johnson-Smith and her children: Noah and Finley of Delaware, Ohio; brother Eric (Amy) Burg of Decorah, IA and children Josh, Davon and Seth Thompson; brother Andrew (Josie) Burg of Ankeny, IA and their son: Brody; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A celebration of life will be held for Kelley with family and friends at a future date.Kelley, may you be happy, may you know your wholeness, may you exist in peace and harmony, may your soul know unconditional love and well-being. -Your loving family and friends
