<![CDATA[The News and Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (12)

The world lost one of its truly good men when Don died at his home on May 22 with his wife of 60 ½ years at his side.Don was born in New Albany to Dolly (Elliott) Adams and Clayton Adams. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Ruth, and an infant sister, Betty Joanne. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Dr. Kela Osbourn Adams; his treasured son, Thad Adams; Thad's wife, Julie, who Don thought of as his daughter; and his beloved grandchildren, Clayton Tyler "Ty" and Abigail "Abby" Adams. Julie and Thad were of great comfort and support during the years of Don's failing health.Don attended New Albany High School and the University of Kentucky. After college, he taught American History at Hazelwood Junior High School in New Albany, a job he loved for 35 years until his retirement in 1995. Don's history classes reflected his warmth and sense of whimsy that helped capture imaginations and spark curiosity. His students responded to his playful ways of sharing with them his enjoyment of Mickey Mouse and the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, a place he was lucky to have visited many times over the years with family and friends. Don's favorite era of U.S. history was the Revolutionary War. The Bicentennial was, therefore, a particularly important observance for him. Another specific interest was in Native American cultures. Don drove his way to Indian reservations, Colonial Williamsburg, Gettysburg, Washington, D.C., the Alamo, Civil War battlefields and countless monuments and historical markers all over the country. Throughout his long career as a teacher, Don also directed student theater. He transformed that program into a full-blown lifetime experience for many of the children involved.Don brought a certain charm and zeal to his classroom and to his theater work. In both contexts, he took great pride in students' achievements. His student theater work reflected his love of Broadway musicals. For his 7th, 8th and 9th grade performers, he wrote scripts, built sets, gathered props, and conducted music. His students grew in knowledge and self-confidence and likewise, his pride in them. The high regard in which his colleagues held Don can be understood, in part, by his having recruited an entire cast of Hazelwood faculty. They performed a musical he wrote based upon the story of 1776. Who else might have succeeded in convincing hardworking faculty that after school rehearsals were a good idea?In his own right as a performer, when his family had briefly relocated to Altadena, CA, Don once sang in the opera Carmen in Los Angeles as a member of his school's boys' choir. His boy soprano voice morphed seamlessly into a melodic tenor that had him performing in a quartet during high school, church choirs, a touring chorus at U of K and as Benjamin Franklin in a musical at Indiana University Southeast.C Donovan Adams moved quietly through his lifetime helping people, incidentally or purposefully, feel good about themselves. He was by nature a loving, caring, generous, and supportive soul who made friends at the grocery store, bakery, bank, restaurant, drive thru window, tailor shop, auto repair garage, gas station, convenience mart, neighborhood and, well, just everywhere he went. People were glad when he came into view. Good ones like Don are missed when they are gone. He was one of the best.A memorial service will be held at the Market Street Chapel of the Naville & Seabrook Funeral Home on Thursday, June 6, at 1 p.m. Memorial visitation will take place after the service from 2 to 7 p.m. at which time the family invites you to join them in honoring his memory.Expressions of sympathy can be made in the form of donations in Don's name to Edesianutrition.org.

With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to a cherished member of our community, Kristin Sue Juliot, who departed from us on May 14, 2024, following a sudden illness. Kristin's presence illuminated the lives of those around her, leaving behind memories that will forever be treasured.Born and raised in Jeffersonville, Kristin embodied the spirit of her hometown with pride and grace. She had a special affinity for exploring the open road, often found cycling alongside kindred spirits, finding solace in the rhythm of the pedals and the beauty of the journey. Her classroom was a haven of warmth and encouragement, where every child felt valued and supported. Kristin's commitment to her students went beyond the classroom walls, extending into the lives of each child she touched, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.Kristin's passing leaves a void in our lives that can never be filled. Yet, as we mourn her loss, let us also celebrate the remarkable woman she was and the countless lives she enriched with her love and light.
