HALO 3: A NovelizationNote From the AuthorThis is a way that I thought Halo 3 might take shape if it was in the form of a novel, such as First Strike or GoO. Read on and enjoy. It wasn’t the best of situations for the Master Chief Spartan-117, John, to have parted with his AI counterpart, Cortana. To leave Cortana aboard the Covenant holy city High Charity now repurposed by the Flood parasite was perhaps the best and at the same time worst decision that the Master Chief had made. Cortana had elected to remain behind to prevent the Flood from escaping High Charity and Delta Halo. The only way that Cortana could make that possible would be to detonate In Amber Clad’s fusion reactors. The resulting explosion would have been more that plentiful in destroying the Covenant City and the fortress world that it remained adjacent to. The only problem was that Cortana was alone with the Flood consciousness Gravemind aboard High Charity. John wondered if perhaps the Gravemind creature might somehow find a way to circumvent Cortana and prevent her from fulfilling her mission of detonating the fusion reactors should she ever need to do so. John put the thought to the back of his mind. Cortana was the most advanced AI that ONI had ever created…that John knew of. He doubted that the Flood could outsmart her. The Spartan's focus dropped the past and returned to the present. John took a visual inspection of his MJOLNIR armor. His armor was dented and scratched in various places from his recent fighting on Delta Halo and High Charity. The Covenant’s most deadly warriors – the cunning Elites, the battle crazed Brutes and even the disfigured Flood corpses had tried their best to stop him. His body ached all over from the continuous fighting over the past few days. Aside from the scratches and some sore muscles, the new armor seemed to still be in serviceable condition. Even that came at a price…After fighting the Covenant for over twenty five years, pain was a constant. It came with the job. But pain didn’t seem to bother him much anymore. What did bother the Master Chief was the fact that the shielding system of his armor did not seem to be functional. After passing through the power conduit to reach the Forerunner ship that the Chief was now aboard, his shields had been drained of energy carrying him across the expanse that separated him and the ship. The charge of his shields had acted like a magnet to the conduit as it pulled him at a high velocity. Somehow, in the process it had pulled more energy than his shields could manage and the shield emitters no longer accepted power from his suit’s micro fusion cells. John ran the diagnostic program for his shield system. The emitters seemed fine, but it appeared that there was an insignificant amount of energy remaining in his suit’s micro fusion cell to regenerate his shields. He remembered the events of his escape from the first Halo and how he had to fight an Elite without his shields aboard Ascendant Justice. Except then he at least had other marines to back him up. This time, he was without backup and weaponless – another physical side effect of the energy conduit. John made a quick inspection of the large spherical compartment that he was in. He didn’t see any obvious ways out of the room. Aside from the large recessed power emitted at the far end of the sphere, John was doubtful that there was any way out.John felt a slight tremor through his feet and leaned up against bulkhead as the tremor grew larger and then subsided. A light came on inside the Master Chief's helmet that alerted him to the presence of receivable UNSC transmissions. He activated his communication suite and began listening to the COM chatter. A human voice came through his helmet’s speakers. “We got a new contact! Unknown classification,” the voice declared from the void.“It isn’t one of ours. Take it out,” another voice ordered. The Master Chief instantly recognized the distinctive voice as Lord Terrence Hood.John quickly opened up a channel on the same band to make contact with the commander of the UNSC Defense Force. “This is Spartan-117. Can anyone hear me? Over,” he transmitted into the void.“Isolate that signal!” Lord Hood ordered to the COM officer in the control room of the MAC platform Cairo Station, and responded immediately after hearing the Chief’s transmission. “Master Chief, you mind telling me what you’re doing on that ship?”John stood up in the uneven Forerunner environment.“Sir, finishing this fight.”“Glad to hear it. Sitrep, Master Chief,” Hood ordered.“Sir, this is a Forerunner ship that came from the Covenant Holy City High Charity. Be advised, In Amber Clad was captured by the Flood and boarded High Charity. Commander Keyes and Sergeant Johnson are presumed captured by Covenant forces. Cortana elected to stay behind to destroy the Flood and a newly discovered Halo if necessary. The Prophet of Truth is aboard this ship along with unknown number of hostile forces. I am currently locked inside an energy transfer chamber and as of yet have not been able to leave. I may be able to escape once the ship is at its destination,” Master Chief responded. “Confirmed, Chief. We received a slipspace message from Cortana a short time ago describing similar events. We’ve been awaiting your arrival.” John stared at the inside of his visor, confused. Somehow Cortana had been able to alert UNSC forces of the situation before he had even come close to Earth. “Master Chief, your order is this: you are to find and capture the Prophet of Truth. It may be the only way to end the siege on Earth. However, if you are unable to capture the Prophet of Truth…I’ll understand,” Hood said. “Sir,” John spoke, “on High Charity, Cortana detected a Covenant AI construct on this vessel. It may be preventing my escape from this chamber. Is there a human AI that may be able to remotely interface with this ship and help me with my mission?”“I may have one in mind, Master Chief.”[Edited on 11.08.2007 8:20 PM PST]
