Is the multiverse just different timelines? ›

To put it simply, dimensions/universes function almost like different locations. There's a whole multiverse full of different universes, just like there's a whole universe full of different planets. Timelines and dimensions aren't the same thing, but infinite timelines exist in one dimension.

The Sacred Timeline in Loki is revealed to be the result of Kang the Conqueror's actions, setting up his role as a major villain in future Marvel projects. The branching of the Sacred Timeline affects other Marvel projects, including What If...?, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Loki series makes a distinction between “timeline” and “universe”. In the first episode, Miss Minutes explains that “the all-knowing Time-Keepers emerged, bringing peace by reorganizing the multiverse into a single timeline, the Sacred Timeline.”

In recent years, there have been proponents and skeptics of multiverse theories within the physics community. Although some scientists have analyzed data in search of evidence for other universes, no statistically significant evidence has been found.

The First Cosmos, or First Firmament, was the original universe, which existed before the Multiverse came into being. It was eternal and unchanging until the Celestials, who desired change, shattered it into the first ever Multiverse and began the multiversal cycles. All of existence stems from its remains.

The Sacred Timeline from Loki is just one multiverse with infinite branches. Each branch is the time stream of one universe. Basically all the energy that exists in that universe from beginning to end. All those universes/timelines were bundled together in a halo formation.

Sylvie's plan was to drop all the reset charges in the Sacred Timeline to cause several branches and keep the TVA busy while she infiltrated their headquarters to kill the Time-Keepers.

The Sacred Timeline is literally multiple timelines. That was the entire point of Loki S2's Loom. The Sacred Timeline is quite literally just Earth 616. Kevin Feige's foreword in the timeline book says as much.

Humans live in a universe; that is a fact. Up for debate, though, is whether that universe lives in a sea of other universes—a multiverse.

Physicists work under the assumption that there are at least 10 dimensions, but the majority of us will never "see" them. Because we only know life in 3D, our brains don't understand how to look for anything more.

Why are there only 52 universes? ›

After the events of Infinite Crisis, the remaining Earths created by Alexander Luthor collapsed back together, combining elements to form one New Earth. However, the single universe was too small to contain the energy inside it and via Hypertime it began replicating—into 52 identical Universes: a new Multiverse.

In the multiverse, every conceivable possibility plays out across these parallel universes. This means that not only do different universes exist, but they can also have their own versions of time. Some may experience time in a manner akin to ours, while others may perceive it differently.

The MCU's Multiverse centers around a single universe called the "Sacred Timeline", which the Time Variance Authority (TVA) works to prevent any branching universes from forming.

But in reality, each universe in the multiverse is its own separate, self-contained bubble. To put it simply, there is no space in between universes because they don't exist in the same physical space.

An alternate timeline is a reality which is different from a parallel universe in that historical events have been altered by a time traveller or other temporal phenomena. These alterations can be prevented from having ever come to pass, although memories of them are usually retained.
