Principal Update May 29 | Grade 9 Farewell, Bikes/Skateboards/Scooters, Our Community, Fundraising, PAT Volunteers - Dr. George Stanley School (2024)

Dear DGS Families

This last week of May has brought many adventures for our students. Grade 8 is at Riverwatch today and tomorrow and if you’re curious about the program and what they get to do, clickHERE. Our Grade 6s are wrapping up their Evidence and Investigation unit with a trip to Youthlink, the Calgary Police Service’s Museum and Learning Centre. If you’d like to learn more about Youthlink, clickHERE.

Last night we held our Year End Concert and our bands played to a sold out and fabulous audience. We want to congratulate ALL of our musicians and Ms. Thomas for their dedication, enthusiasm and talent. It’s so exciting that 1 in 5 students at DGS are in our music program- we appreciate the hours of practice you have all listened to at home, and it’s humbling when it all comes together into joyful, skilled performance.

Also, please join us in congratulating MEGAN BOONE, the winner of last night's 50/50 draw. The final take home prize amount was $2130. The profit from this fundraiser will support the school to purchase gym equipment, musical instruments, technology related items, and bussing for field trips. Thank you for your support!

And finally, we are excited to welcome our incoming Grade 5 and 6 students from Cranston School and our incoming Grade 6’s from Sibylla Kiddle School. Next week, our new students will visit our school again and participate in some “getting to know us” activities. In the Fall, our student population was projected to be 782 students. As of today, we have 806 students registered for school. We look forward to new faces, new voices, and new adventures.

Grade 9 Farewell

Our Grade 9 Farewell Ceremony will take place at 9:30 in the main gym on Friday June 7, 2024. This event is intended for Grade 9 students and their family members. If parents wish to have younger siblings who attend DGS included in the audience, we ask that you let your younger sibling's homeroom teachers know and have them meet you in the foyer just before 9:30 am. We anticipate the formal program will be finished by 11:00 am. A short, outdoor reception for Grade 9 students and their families will take place following the ceremony. This will be an informal reception, with the focus being on photo opportunities, and gathering together over light refreshments and music in the backyard area. Tickets are NOT required to attend the Ceremony and Reception. More details concerning the fieldtrips to Calaway Park and The Beach will be sent closer to the date.

Bicycles, Skateboards and Scooters

Our bike and scooter racks are filling up again, which makes us so happy to see! Please send your child with a sturdy lock to lock their bike, scooter or skateboard up each day. We are not able to house these items in lockers or other areas in the building. It’s also a good time to remind families to register your child’s bike athttps://bikeindex.org/, which is used by CPS in the recovery of stolen bicycles. Should your child’s bike or other property be stolen from any location, report it online athttps://www.calgary.ca/cps/report-a-crime.html.

Please note that the CBE is not responsible for theft or loss of personal property and use of bike and skateboard racks is at individual risk.

Respecting the Community Around Us

Students are reminded that they represent both DGS, their families and our community when visiting local businesses before and after school. Recently, student behaviour after school at our nearby shopping plaza has been brought forward as something we can improve. Please take a moment with your child to talk about ensuring they remember to act like they do when their parents are WITH them at Sobey’s, Subway, CPU, Good Earth and Petro-Canada. Part of growing up means learning these important skills for independence, and we want to be a part of the solution to community safety.

DGS Fundraising Society Event

The Kona Ice Truck will visit the school at noon on June 14, 2024. To order your refreshing treat, please clickHERE! Online ordering closes on June 13 at 5:00pm, however, payment will also be accepted at the Kona Truck on that day if you miss the deadline.

Provincial Achievement Test Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers to help with P.A.T.’s in June. If you are available and have a Valid Police Clearance, please click on the link below to sign-up.

Possible supports that we might need you for during the exam will be the following:

  • Scribes and Readers
  • Hallway Monitor

Volunteers will most likely not be staying to the end of the designated time as many students will be finished at this point.
