Re: U BRAKES-990/996/EVO etc. Whats ur choice, why?
Threaded is better than posts.
I prefer Demolition brakes with the sealed bearings, but value for the money - I've never had a problem with Hombres.
My favourite brake shoes on chrome rims are the green Hombre Fiesta ones.
And I much prefer SST Oryg cables for detanglers to anything else.
The thing with brakes is individual mechanical skill, not so much the components. The real secret is a mix of Tri-Flow and thin white lithium grease in the cables. Modern lined cables. I prefer a non-linear cable for the front brake.
I would rather run my brakes the way I want them than try to get a set up to fit 2.4" tires. Tires that big are so sluggish. The 2.1"-ish MAC2 KHE folding tires are perfect (if you don't grind / slide on the sidewalls). Maybe 1/3 of the weight of 2.4" tires, too.

I still have the magazine where Eddie was interviewed, and thats who I learned the cable greazin technique from. That was, 87? Sounds bout right. Havent forgot it since lol.

Re: U BRAKES-990/996/EVO etc. Whats ur choice, why?
I have always been able to set up whatever brake to work well but not all brakes can be made to feel the same. They flex differently, they have different geometry and some are easier to setup than others. Tektro fx 10s have a very nice feel but setup different due to a different spring design, you almost can't get it wrong. I like the shape of evos (haven't had evo IIs), they allowed me to fit 36/13 gearing on my TNT kod where 990s didn't. I now have a set of fly cnc brakes to try out, the originals.
As for cables, I like Shimano m-system, park poly lube on the cable and Tri-flow in the housing. Newer linear cable housing are hard to cut properly with the wire housing stranding. I think the older style spiral wrapped steel works fine.

It's not so much the tire as the frame design. If the brake mounts are farther apart, the Evo II's might not work. Frames and forks have gotten wider to fit fat tires.

Yeah, that's what I've been seeing, and a few people say that the Springfield have a better reach. But I don't care much for the mounting design. Local lbs hasn't had anyone run a Thunderbeast frame with brakes yet to give me an opinion on it. Was just hoping to save myself a couple hundred on brakes trying them out. Maybe have to just give Subrosa a ring.
Anything is negotiable.

I always used to stick to Dia Compe. I found it wasn't so much the brakes that were bad but the springs and adjusters etc. 990s always worked for me so I just stuck with those
I bought these today.
Will do a quick write up once they are fitted.

Hands down, TRP 990 with odyssey ghost pads. The best feeling and working brakes I've ever rode. The bearing pivots and linear springs are epic!

Actually quite happy that this topic has been started, as I'm about to build my first fully new school freestyle frame. And would like to be able to have the option of running 2.4s on it. Not that I necessarily will, but still. So far as AD990s go, I've set them up with 2.4s on an OS frame with no problems, grabbed hard once dialed, definitely had to toy with the adjusstment a bit but they slammed when it was done. But that being said, I have noticed a lot of people saying they have problems running a big tire with various brakes. And it seems to be mostly on the frames with wide rear ends specifically designed to run a big tire slammed. So if anyone can give some insight in that regard it would be great. I've been looking at the design of the Evo2, Shadow Sano, Demolition Vulcan and the Eclat Talon. So anyone running these with fatties, I'd love to hear what it's on and thoughts.
my new bike has the reissue Dia-compe 990 ad u brakes with fat as big tires so far no issues. but most my others I run Fly bikes or Evo. I went with Dia-compe just because there the only ones in gold that don't look orange.

Re: U BRAKES-990/996/EVO etc. Whats ur choice, why?
Imho, posts may give you your versatility on mounting (angle, toe-in, etc), but they're potentially able to flex more. This is because with a threaded pad, the clamping force presses back onto the brake arm centerline. Posts are bolted on above/below the arm, so this force is applied asymmetrically.
I've also found that posts tend to have more issues with pad installation, due to clearances within which to turn wrenches.
It's like the man says, there's no problems...only solutions.

A friend back in the day told me about the levers (Ryan Humphries) and I found the brakes that worked with them because I like my things to match if they can. The brakes really are so simple to setup compared to traditional 990s and since I started running them well before Fly bikes and Revenge started to put out "proper" u-brakes I've just kept them.
Here's an old pic when I was still in NYC (must have been taken between '03-'05) with them on my old Failure.

That was why back in the 90s I swapped everything from canti to v brake as soon as I could. The pad setup on Vs is basically the same as U brakes with threaded posts, a lot easier to get dialed in reasonably well. Cantis and OG 990s are a PITA to get aligned right period, the post design just has too much wiggle room. If you breathe wrong while tightening a bolt, you might as well just start over

springs are what affects brake retraction. clamping force is a product of physics (leverage, pulleys, etc) and your commitment to the gym.

This. And that the best brakes I have ever felt have always had the least amount of spring tension. Less is more.

The whole reason behind the springfield brake is for people(specifically kids)who do not know how to set up brakes,or too cheap to buy the EVO2's or both.

That's something kids these days don't have the pleasure of learning (setting old AD990s). That and how to setup a gyro.

Don't lose the spring (it would be kind of hard to do so, I think). They come with an extra spring.
Also, regardless of reason for the design - they work. I can set up EVOs and everything else just fine. However, the Springfield is set up much quicker and at just over 1/3 the cost of an EVO.
Same performance, less parts, less set up = win in my book. Also, kind of think they look better

This is funny, I never had a problem with cantis till I got this 95 Proline I've been scooting around on. The factory brake on this thing was a definite wtf moment for me, and the worst alignment. Like El Gecko said, "breathe wrong" lol.
