Roadkill
A rock n' road movie about a girl who learns to drive.
At loose ends with life in Toronto, Ramona (Highway 61's Valerie Buhagiar) is abruptly dispatched to the wilds of Northern Ontario by her mercenary record promotor boss (eXistenZ's Gerry Quigley) to retrieve The Children of Paradise, a wayward rock band that has disappeared mid-tour. The resulting films were shot quickly, with low budgets, improvised takes and live sound. The Plot Against Harry
Harry Plotnick (Martin Priest), a New York City numbers runner, is back on the streets after a nine month prison stint, looking to reclaim his turf. Along with his sidekick Max (Henry Nemo), Harry accidentally crashes into the car of his ex-wife Kay (Maxine Woods), ex-brother-in-law Leo (Ben Lang), and his daughter (Sandra Kazan), who he hasn't seen in decades. Caught in a whirlwind of Jewish family life and all kinds of New York strivers, Harry encounters mobsters, lawyers, caterers, an overbearing sister, another daughter he has never met, cops, rabbis, and radio hosts.
Discouraged by laughless test screenings, director Michael Roemer pulled the film from release. The film finally surfaced in 1989, and was immediately heralded as one of the greatest of all American independent films. Re-released theatrically in 2023, and recognized by a new generation, The Plot Against Harry is a true masterpiece.

Beijing Watermelon
Shunzo (Bengal) and his wife Michi (Masako Motai) run a beloved greengrocer on the outskirts of Tokyo. When Lee, a struggling exchange student from China, visits the shop but is unable to afford the produce, an uneasy relationship sprouts. Begrudgingly, Shunzo agrees to lower his prices. Soon, Lee's classmates begin frequenting the shop. As Shunzo's generosity sneaks up on him and strains his family's welfare, he confronts his role as surrogate father to his newfound Chinese friends.
Shot between May - July of 1989 and addressing the historically charged notion of a Sino-Japanese friendship, this lesser-seen masterpiece from director Nobuhiko Obayashi (House) chronicles the end of a decade marked by the Japanese economic bubble and the brutal close of possibility in China. A delicate elegy to the Chinese students of its time, Beijing Watermelon finds Obayashi at his most modern, channeling the style of Yasujiro Ozu, while his experimental flourishes provide the perfect disruption, inviting viewers to fill in the blanks of history.

Mister Lonely
